Plastic Grocery Bag Ban Starts Wednesday, May 4
Starting May 4, 2022, New Jersey retail stores, grocery stores, and food service businesses may not provide or
sell single-use plastic carryout bags and polystyrene foam food service products. Stores smaller than 2,500 square feet (a big bigger than most convenience stores or bodegas) can sell you single-use paper bags, but larger stores are not allowed.
You must bring your own grocery bags that is designed to be used at least 125 times. Most grocery stores will sell you these bags, but if you forget to bring your own bags, or you didn’t bring enough bags, you will have to purchase additional bags at the store.
